This article discusses the Protocol on Pollutant release and transfer Registers (PRTRs), adopted in 2003 at an extraordinary session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention; highlights the main elements and objectives of the PRTR Protocol; provides information on international cooperation promoting PRTRs. The article describes the best practices for conducting PRTRs using the case of the European Union, the USA, Australia and the Czech Republic.
